On Friday (the 13th, spooky), the Flyers gave me a great birthday present and announced that, after a stressful summer of waiting, they had signed Ivan Provorov to a 6 year x 6.75M AAV contract.
Then there was only Travis Konecny left to sign. A summer of tension, and watching other teams sign key players while the Flyers got closer and then farther and then closer again to signing deals with their two most important free agents.
On Tuesday, the Flyers finally announced that they had locked Travis Konecny up on a six-year contract, and the Flyers social media took to Twitter to tease fans who had been a little, let’s say impatient, with the team on social media. The Flyers twitter account went out and individually replied to every fan that had been pestering them with some form of “Sign Provorov and Konecny” for the past few months. All the fans. Every single one of them.
It gets old for social media teams reading the same sentence over and over and over again, especially when they don’t have the ability to actually address people’s comments. So, when Konecny finally signed and the Twittersphere was blowing up, the Flyers Twitter got in on the action and it was hilarious.
This new attitude continued through the Flyers first few pre-season games as the account kept active, responding to fans and trying to take on a more casual tone. Some might even call it millennial.
Maybe an NHL team account mass replying to tweets isn’t your cup of tea, and you can continue rolling your eyes at every Flyers tweet that shows up in your timeline, just like you have been since probably 2011. This is obviously a new direction for the Flyers social media, trying a bit of a sarcastic, quick-witted, and playful attitude for a team that’s trying to get back on course.
Even if it comes off as corny, it’s better than boring as hell.
