OCTOBER 15 Flames 3/Flyers 1
In the first period, Calgary’s Michael Frolick got the first goal of the game in 1:35 with a wrist shot. Within the first three minutes of the game, there was a lot of time spent in the Philadelphia zone, where Brian Elliott was forced to make a big save seconds after letting the first goal in.
Within the first five minutes of the game, the Flyers had four icings and spent most of the time defending their zone from Calgary pressure, which quickly moved into a lot of penalties. The orange and black went on the first powerplay for a hooking minor thanks to Frolick.
About halfway through the period, the Flyers get some shots on goal and spend some time in the neutral zone and the Flames zone, but not too long. Michael Raffl makes a strong effort to chase down a loose puck but Sam Bennett of the Flames goes into the box for interference, putting Philadelphia back on the powerplay.
Shayne Ghostisbehere got a shot but no goal during the powerplay. Ghostisbehere then goes into the penalty box for slashing, while still on the powerplay eventually resulting in a short powerplay for the Flames. Matthew Tkachuk then gets a holding penalty giving the Flames back the one-man advantage.
Kevin Hayes has a nice shot on goal, but cannot finish. At this point in the first period, the Flyers had three power plays, but no goals and have spent too much time in their own zone. Calgary then gets another powerplay due to a holding penalty on Ivan Provorov.
In the last five seconds of the period, Calgary gets a goal that is quickly reviewed and taken back.
At the start of the second period, there is an early shot on goal by Philadelphia; a good 2-on-1 that gets a solid start for the orange and black. A 3-on-2 rush to the Flames provides them with a shot on goal, but it did not go in.
James Van Riemsdyk got three shots in succession but all were stopped. The pressure continued in the Flames zone causing a Flames icing, but eventually, Calgary went on the powerplay.
Throughout the period, the Flyers had a good offense and held onto their solid play on the penalty kill, especially when Johnny Gaudreau went into the penalty box for holding. Philadelphia looked stronger but had difficulty finishing and keeping the puck out of their own zone, which proved true when Andrew Mangiapane made it 2-0.
The Flyers started the third period off strong, primarily due to Elliott keeping pucks out of the net. Elliott made back to back save four minutes into the period. This is due to a lack of pressure made by the Flyers.
Matt Niskanen made his first goal in the orange and black, although it did little to motivate the Flyers to tie it up. Oskar Lindblom had three chances to score, and Hayes made a great move that did not end in a goal.
With about three minutes left in the game Coach Alain Vigneault called a time-out, then pulled Elliott out for an extra attacker. There are multiple attempts on goal for the Flyers before Calgary calls a time-out with 30 seconds left in the game. Elias Lindholm then scores with 10.4 seconds left, making it 3-1, Calgary.
Cage Cleaning
- Brian Elliot is rightfully player of the game, keeping the Flyers a close final score.
- Not the best game for the orange and black, need to make some offensive changes.
