Pigeon Coop Postgame: Flyers, Elliott Win Big Against Vegas

October 21st: Flyers 6/Golden Knights 2

Coming in on a four-game losing streak, the Flyers were looking to earn a big win against the Vegas Golden Knights in Philadelphia on Monday night. In regards to housekeeping, the Flyers had two new faces in their winning lineup against the Knights; Joel Farabee made his long-awaited NHL debut, and Mikhail Vorobyev also returned to the lineup after having played a handful of games last season in the Orange and Black.

In the first period, the Flyers played, seemingly, their best period of the 2019-2020 season so far. Going against the best-ranked penalty kill in the league, the Flyers got on the board first when Travis Konecny lit the lamp on the power play to make it 1-0 Flyers.

The Flyers had all of the momentum heading into the second period, which was further proven when Kevin Hayes tallied his second goal of the year to make it 2-0 Philly. Hayes, from below the goal line, was able to squeak the puck through Vegas netminder, Oscar Dansk, on his backhand to double the Flyers’ lead.

Only forty-four seconds later, Ivan Provorov’s shot from the blue line was tipped by a Golden Knight and then by Michael Raffl before it found its way in the back of the net. Vorobyev tallied an assist on this goal, making the score 3-0 Flyers. With 5 minutes left in the period, both Matt Niskanen and Oskar Lindblom added goals to the Flyers’ total, just fifty-five seconds apart.

Early on in the third period, both Hayes and Robert Hagg headed to the penalty box to give the Knights almost a full 5-on-3 power play. The Knights capitalized and got on the board with a goal from Jonathan Marchessault. Later on in the period, Reilly Smith found himself on a breakaway and scored quickly to make it 5-2.

However, the Knights’ offense was quieted when Raffl got his own breakaway, scored his second of the night, and regained the Flyers’ 4 goal lead. The Flyers were able to hang onto their lead through the rest of the game, earning a much-needed win.

Cage Cleaning

  • Flyers’ goaltender Brian Elliott played with immense confidence for an entire sixty minutes between the pipes. Elliott stopped thirty-three out of thirty-five shots on net and earned a .943 save percentage. Elliott’s solid goaltending definitely played a big role in the win, giving the rest of the team confidence to play in front of him.
  • Player of the Game: Travis Konecny – Konecny, having 1 goal and 1 assist tonight, has most definitely begun to earn his paycheck. He has 10 points (4 G, 6 A) in his first 7 games of the season, averaging 1.4 points per game. https://twitter.com/NHLFlyers/status/1186424863201939457?s=20

  • After some pretty lackluster offense recently, the Flyers saw goals scored from 5 different goal scorers tonight, with assists coming from eleven different players. The diversity of the scoring surge in this game will be incredibly important in the near future for the Flyers.
