Pigeon Coop Postgame: Hart Stays Hot in 3-2 Overtime Win

November 7th: Flyers 3/Canadiens 2 (OT)

The Philadelphia Flyers finished off their three-game homestand with a contest against the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night. 21-year-old goaltender Carter Hart got the start in net for the Flyers, in which he would face off against veteran Carey Price. The Flyers headed into the game with their best home record in twelve years, going 5-1-1 in their last 7 home games. With a tough road trip ahead, the Flyers looked to capitalize on home ice, and they did just that in a 3-2 Overtime win.

In the first period, the Flyers opened up the scoring when Phillipe Myers scored with 6:09 to go, off a wrist shot from the blue line. His goal was unassisted. Shortly thereafter, Price showed his talent when he robbed Sean Couturier on a feed from Travis Konecny. Myers’ lone goal was the only scoring of the period, giving the Flyers an early 1-0 lead.

In the second period, it only took 49 seconds for James vanReimsdyk to light the lamp, giving the Flyers a 2-0 lead. Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek earned assists on JVR’s goal. However, Hart’s shutout hopes were ended when Ben Chiarot scored with just over six minutes in the second remaining. The second period ending with the Flyers still on top, 2-1.

Four minutes into the third period, the Canadiens made it a tie game, after the Flyers turned the puck over to defenseman Shea Weber, who beat Hart. The game remained tied at 2, even though Flyers’ forward Carsen Twarynski did have a penalty shot opportunity with 6:43 left in the game, Price had an answer for him. The Flyers and Canadiens headed into Overtime, both teams earning one point in the standings for their regulation efforts.

Less than a minute into OT, the Flyers found the back of the net to win the game 3-2. Couturier took a snapshot in front of Price, that trickled its way into the back of the net. Ivan Provorov and Konecny were given assists on the game-winning goal. The Flyers outshot the Canadiens by a large margin of 43 to 24.

Cage Cleaning

  • Although fans had some worries about goaltender Carter Hart, it is clear that Hart has found his groove within this homestand. His win against the Canadiens was his third win against the last three opponents; Montreal, New Jersey, and Carolina. Hart made 22 saves on Montreal’s 24 shots and earned a .917 save percentage.
  • Ivan Provorov had a standout game against the Canadiens. He had four shots on goal, and one assist, but more notably, he had the check of the game with this beautiful open-ice hit on Nate Thompson.

  • Interestingly enough, the Flyers’ one major error against Montreal was their failure to capitalize on the Power Play. The Flyers went 0-for-6 man-advantages, even though their home Power Play was second-ranked in the NHL coming into the game against a lacking Montreal Penalty Kill. The Flyers’ Power Play success will be crucial on their coming road trip, so hopefully, they will be able to find the back of the net when on the PP.
