Around the NHL:
This week was a slower one on the ice for hockey players with the NHL on a league-wide three-day, holiday break. But that doesn’t mean players weren’t making an impact.
San Jose Sharks forward, Evander Kane spent time spreading holiday cheer in the Bay Area; by exposing hockey to kids in Oakland before the Sharks Holiday Assist party. Taking time to provide the opportunity is important as it may give a student a chance at being interested in hockey. Kane then went to the Oakland Ice Center to meet with more students, sled hockey players and special-needs players to expose them to hockey as well.
Sidney Crosby partnered with CCM Hockey to provide 87 sets of hockey equipment to participants in three hockey Nova Scotia programs this week. The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native and Penguins captain announced his fulfillment of the donation in the new year.
The programs benefiting from Crosby’s donation will be the Hockey Nova Scotia Black Youth Ice Hockey Program, the Hockey Nova Scotia Indigenous Female Hockey Academy, and the Hockey Nova Scotia-ISANS New Canadians Hockey Program. The goal of the three programs is to introduce ice hockey to the populations that are under-represented in the rinks.
On December 13th, the Philadelphia Flyers announced that forward Oskar Lindblom has been diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. Ewing’s sarcoma grows in the bones or around the soft tissue around the bones. Since the announcement, the Flyers, Flyers Community, Philadelphia and the NHL have rallied around Lindblom, with merchandise like T-shirts and bracelets are being sold; revenue going to support places like Alex’s Lemonade Stand.
Biscuit Tees, a t-shirt company created and sold t-shirts in support of Lindblom and they have raised over $200,000 for the Sarcoma Foundation for America by selling the shirts at Flyers home games and online. When the Flyers played the Rangers, some of the New York players wore the shirts in support. The outpouring of support continues.
