NWHL Flyover: All-Stars and Outdoors

Around the NWHL

Midway through December, it was announced that four Professional Women’s Hockey Player’s Association (PWHPA) players will participate in the ECHL All-Star Classic on January 22, in Wichita, Kansas.

Dani Cameranesi, Gigi Marvin, Kali Flanagan, and Annie Pankowski will each be playing on one of the four teams competing in the All-Star game. All four players are members of the United States’ national hockey team and will play the Wichita Thunder, the Edmonton Oilers ECHL affiliated team.

The All-Star Classic is a 3-on-3 tournament and consists primarily of Thunder players. The tournament has several rounds of hockey games and a Skills Competition held in between each round; the points being cumulative to determine a winner. This is the second consecutive season women have participated in a men’s league skills competition after Kendal Coyne Schofield participated in the NHL’s skills competition in January of 2019. The classic will air exclusively on the NHL Network.

Towards the end of December, the NWHL announced a sponsorship with the AccuWeather Global Weather Center. The company is a global weather and digital media leader known for highly accurate weather forecasts and warnings. The weather app’s entrepreneurial culture complements the culture of the NWHL for supporting the other careers the league’s players are pursuing. As part of the Player’s Association agreement where revenue from the partnership is split 50/50 with NWHL players, which is additional income beyond their salaries.

On December 28th, the Metropolitan Riveters played the Buffalo Beauts in the first-ever LaBatt Blue Buffalo Believes Classic. It was the first outdoor game hosted by the NWHL between two NWHL teams.  It was the second outdoor game the league has been a part of in its first five seasons (The first outdoor game saw two women’s leagues play against each other when NWHL all-stars faced off against CWHL all-stars). The rival teams battled it out in front of a sold-out crowd of over 1200 fans and 4.6K fans on Twitch.

Women’s hockey is coming to Philadelphia! The PWHPA recently announced that a Dream Gap Tour stop will be at the Virtua Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ from February 28 to March 1st. The showcase will have four games; with winners from Saturday’s games going to the championship game on Sunday, the other teams going to the consolation game. The rosters consist of a mix of Canadian and American players with a sprinkle of Olympians too.
