Pigeon Coop Postgame: Flyers Blank Red Wings in Shutout Victory

February 3, 2020

It was a “taking care of business” kind of night for the Philadelphia Flyers (29-17-7) as they blanked the Detroit Red Wings (12-38-4), 3-0, at Little Caesars Arena on Monday night.

Throughout the first period, both teams exchanged quality scoring chances. However, after back and forth play, neither was able to score.

The trend would remain the same to start the second period. Then, at 9:31 of the middle stanza, Scott Laughton broke the stalemate. His third goal in as many games gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead.

After a shaky start to the final period, Philadelphia extended their lead. Kevin Hayes scored a short-handed goal at 2:47 of the period making it 2-0 in favor of the Flyers. Hayes’ goal was his fourth short-handed tally of the season and second in as many games.

With just under three minutes left on the clock, the Flyers would seal the deal. Matt Niskanen fired the puck the length of the ice scoring an empty-net goal making it 3-0 for Philadelphia. The tally was the second short-handed goal of the evening.

The Red Wings had no answers and the score went final.

Brian Elliott made saves on all 16 shots faced in net for the Flyers. His second shutout of the season gave Philadelphia another crucial two points in the standings.

The Flyers’ next game is Thursday night when they take on the New Jersey Devils at Wells Fargo Center. Puck drop between the two teams is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
