November 13: Capitals 2/ Flyers 1 (shootout)
Looking to continue a 4 game winning streak, the Philadelphia Flyers started against the Washington Capitals a little weak, with the Flyers struggling against the pressure of the Capitals forecheck.
Six minutes into the first, Capitals Brendon Leipsic scored giving Washington the first lead. All period, the Flyers struggled to clear the defensive zone relying on the defense and Carter Hart to make some crucial saves. Over the whole first period, the Capitals managed to keep the Flyers to only five shots on goal. Philadelphia was outshot by the Capitals 16-5.
The Capitals weren’t able to suppress Flyers shots so effectively through the final two periods, but the Flyers still had difficulty getting any past Brayden Holtby.
The Flyers failed to take advantage of power plays early in the game (one in the first against Jakub Vrana and two in the second against Richard Panik and another on Vrana). It wasn’t until Claude Giroux’s power-play goal in the third that the Flyers would get on the board.
For the fourth time in six games, the game went passed overtime and into a shootout decision. T.j. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for the Capitals while Claude Giroux was the only player for the Flyers to score, giving the Capitals the win and ending the Flyers win streak.
Despite the loss, the Flyers have points in seven straight games and are third in the Metropolitan Division.
Cage Cleaning
- The Capitals are sitting comfortably at the top of the Metro, and despite the loss, the Flyers actually held their own against an Eastern powerhouse. The Flyers are now one of the only teams that have limited the Capitals offense.
- A few Flyers decided to change up their hairstyles. It didn’t do anything to change Hayes’ luck.
- Carter Hart ended the night with 35 saves on 36 shots for a .927 save percentage. Hopefully, his performance over the Flyers winning streak calms the nerves of some fans who thought he might be losing it.
